Silver Sage Pet Food Program

The Silver Sage Pet Program is for those who receive Meals on Wheels. The program has nothing to do with income level.  We assist those who do not have resources to properly feed their pets.  However there is a limit of 2 pets per household. Clients can call the Center whenever they are in need of more pet food and MOW drivers deliver sacks of dog and cat food. 

Many clients who receive Meals on Wheels are in need of pet care assistance.  With your help, those in need will be able to enjoy their own nutritious meals and feed their pets healthy food, too.  Donations of money are most appreciated.  We have a brand that we try to send to the pets so that new brands upset their stomachs.  Your donations will go a long way in helping this program continue to be a success.  Pet memorials or tributes would be a great gesture to honor special pets. 

The idea for the program began in February 2015 when an article was published in the SA Express News.  This article was about a program in Warrensburg,  Missouri, that delivered pet food to the Meals on Wheels clients.  This article sparked an interest.  After much research and contacting similar programs in Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, and San Antonio, the program began to take shape.  Deliveries began in August 2015 and are very much appreciated by MOW clients.  In September 2017, we had  34 clients and 66 pets.  May, 2022, we now have........ 

Keeping pets in the homes of these clients would serve many purposes.  Studies have shown that pet ownership benefits the elderly in many ways.  They are less likely to suffer depression and loneliness, it lowers blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol, and increases the opportunity for exercise, activities, and socialization.  Caring for pets gives the clients a sense of purpose and a reason to get up in the morning.  Cuddling literally kills depression, relieves anxiety and strengthens the immune system!
